Annual balance sheet 2024: Schmidt Spiele with stable sales at a high level

Schmidt Spiele reports positive results for the 2024 financial year with total product sales of 57.5 million euros, which is almost on a par with the previous year. While export trade stood out positively with growth of eleven per cent, domestic business was three per cent weaker than in 2023 due to the reduction in the number of branches of the Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof department stores' group with its toy departments and the closure of the supermarket chain real, which offered toys in the self-service area. Schmidt Spiele once again recorded high sales in the children's and family games category, matching those of the two previous years. An increase of three per cent was achieved in the puzzles segment. Sales in the toys and plush category stabilised at the high level of 2022, which represents a slight decline compared to the strong growth seen in 2023.

‘2024 was a year that brought positive moments and challenges in equal measure. We consider ourselves fortunate that our specialist retail business, our cooperation business and online retail are so strong that the insolvencies of two well-known department stores' and supermarket chains in one year only led to a slight decline in domestic business. We are particularly proud of the fact that our products, both new and classic, are so well received abroad, which is clearly reflected in the figures,’ says Axel Kaldenhoven, Managing Director of Schmidt Spiele GmbH.

Anniversary and awards

Last year at Schmidt Spiele was characterised by its successful games – the cult game ‘Mensch ärgere Dich nicht’, which turned 110 years old, as well as the new products that brought in nominations and awards, above all the cooperative game ‘e-Mission’, which was honoured as “Connoisseur Game of the Year”. Last year, Schmidt Spiele was represented on the coveted recommendation lists of the ‘Spiel des Jahres’ jury with a total of five titles – three in the children's game category, one in the family game category and one in the connoisseur game category – out of a total of 22 titles that made it onto the longlists. The children's guessing game ‘Big Little Gems’ was among the three nominees for ‘Kinderspiel des Jahres 2024’ and ‘e-Mission’ secured first place in the ‘Kennerspiele’ category. While the new game inventions won over the jury and players, the Berlin games publisher paid tribute to the classic ‘Mensch ärgere Dich nicht’, on which the publishing house was founded, with numerous campaigns and events. The extremely popular Mensch ärgere Dich nicht championships were celebrated in honour of the 110th anniversary and the theme was also highlighted at trade fairs alongside the presentation of new products.

Outlook for 2025

Schmidt Spiele is starting the current year with nine new games, a strong range of toys and plush toys as well as the licence business, which will be presented at the Spielwarenmesse Nuremberg. A major topic for 2025 and at the Spielwarenmesse will be the world innovation of puzzles based on sustainable grass cardboard. The new quality cardboard, which is characterised by resource conservation, was developed exclusively for Schmidt Spiele. The first puzzles made from this material will be launched on the market this year, with which the games publisher is consistently pursuing its sustainable strategy. In the licensing business, the strong brands will be further expanded and highlights such as products for the cinema films ‘Taming Dragons Made Easy’, ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, ‘Gabby's Dollhouse’, ‘Bibi Blocksberg - The Great Witches’ Reunion’ and the 25th anniversary of “SpongeBob SquarePants” are expected. Schmidt Spiele 2025 will also once again be strongly and broadly positioned in the area of events: In addition to trade and public fairs, the company's own events - championships in Mensch-ärgere-Dich-nicht and Kniffel games as well as puzzles and games days for the whole family – will bring people together and connect them.
