Brussels categorises "Shein" as a "very large" online platform

The fact that Temu and Shein are no longer just small niche platforms should be known to anyone involved in e-commerce by now. After both platforms published their users as part of the Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission's categorisation of Shein as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/de/IP_24_2326) was the logical consequence. This should also happen shortly for Temu.

Platforms and search engines with over 45 million active monthly users are categorised by the EU as very large online platforms or very large online search engines and are therefore subject to the legal provisions of the DSA for the protection of users.

The latest user figures show that, in addition to Amazon, Zalando, Google Shopping and AliExpress, Temu and Shein now also fall into this category.

As a VLOP, Shein has four months to comply with stricter rules aimed at empowering and protecting online users, including minors. Shein will also need to assess and mitigate the risks of counterfeit, illegal and unsafe products.
