Brussels initiates official proceedings against Temu
The Chinese online platform Temu has been criticized for some time for selling non-EU-compliant products in the European single market. In mid-October, Brussels had already sent a formal request for information to the online retailer, which was classified as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA) in May. DVSI reported.
Formal proceedings
On October 31, the European Commission announced that it had initiated formal proceedings against the company. The investigation is a further step in the EU's efforts to tackle the sale of illegal products and prevent the potentially addictive nature of the service. The Commission is basing its decision on a preliminary analysis of the risk assessment report submitted by Temu at the end of September 2024. Following the formal initiation of proceedings, the Commission will now gather further evidence, for example by making further requests for information to Temu. Brussels also intends to consult third parties and carry out monitoring measures and interviews. Temu would be held liable under the DSA if the Commission's suspicions prove to be correct.
