BTHA investigation reveals serious safety risk for children via various online marketplaces

In the latest edition of its investigation into online marketplaces, the British Toy and Hobby Association has published its findings. These show that 85% of toys purchased from third party sellers via major online marketplaces could pose a risk to children.

On this basis, the BTHA is calling on the government to take urgent and strong action to protect children from the sale of dangerous toys in the UK.

Since 2018, the BTHA has been testing toys purchased via online marketplaces. The current results are based on independent testing of a randomly selected sample of toys purchased from third party sellers on 11 well-known online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Shein and Temu.

The 2024 results show that 85% of toys purchased are unsafe, i.e. pose a risk to children's health and safety, and that a further 8% are illegal. This figure has remained constant over the last six years since the BTHA began testing.
