Despite inflation: 82% with unchanged budget for children's gifts at Christmas
A recent survey commissioned by tonies, the manufacturer of the popular Toniebox, shows that 82 percent of German families are determined to leave the Christmas gift budget for their children unchanged despite high inflation rates. While 26 percent state that inflation has no influence on the gift budget at all, 21 percent of parents say that they will reduce their overall Christmas budget, but the proportion for their children will remain the same. 35% are able to keep their Christmas budget constant because they are more frugal with other expenses.
Germans are the most generous
In an international comparison of the tonies core markets, Germany comes out on top: in France (79%) and the UK (73%), fewer families are able to leave the gift budget for their children unchanged. In the USA, only 65% of parents say they will spend as much on their children as they did at Christmas the previous year, despite inflation.
The survey, for which the opinion research institute Civey interviewed 1,000 people in Germany, also sheds light on the specific amount of Christmas spending: 81% of parents surveyed plan to spend up to 200 euros per child on Christmas presents. Three percent of families in Germany are even prepared to buy presents for more than 500 euros per child.
Gifts should promote child development
According to the tonies survey, 66% of German parents think it is important or very important that their Christmas presents promote children's development.Interestingly, this figure tends to be higher among fathers than mothers. In an international comparison of the tonies core markets, however, German parents are more reserved in this respect: in the UK, 75 percent of parents attach importance to development-related gifts, in the USA the figure is as high as 77 percent. The high figure in France is particularly remarkable, where an impressive 89% of parents emphasize how important it is to them that Christmas gifts promote their children's development. In focus: fun and sustainability
