EU Council wants to hold influencers accountable
Influencers have an increasing influence on online content and the way people perceive the world. The effects are not only positive, but can also be potentially harmful - both for individuals and society. The European Council is now calling on both the Commission and the Member States to make efforts to promote media literacy and responsible online influencer behavior in order to avoid negative effects such as misinformation, online hate speech, cyberbullying or illegal content. The Council also drew attention to the increase in “kidfluencers”, i.e. influencers under the age of 18, and the need to protect children.
