Experts expect inflation rates to rise worldwide
Economic experts from around the world expect a slight rise in inflation rates in the coming years. That is the result of the Economic Experts Survey, a quarterly survey of experts conducted by the ifo Institute. According to the survey, the inflation rate worldwide will reach 4.0% in 2025, then 3.9 percent next year, and 3.8% in 2028. In Germany, inflation for this year is expected to reach 2.4%, in Austria 2.9 percent, and in Switzerland 0.9%. “Compared to the previous quarter, inflation expectations have risen slightly,” says ifo researcher Niklas Potrafke. “America’s tariff policy is driving inflation expectations in many countries. In Germany, they are also influenced by the new public debt.”
Inflation expected to rise
Inflation expectations have risen, particularly in North America. The experts now expect inflation to reach 3.2% in 2025, 0.6 percentage points more than in the previous quarter’s survey. Inflation in North America is also expected to reach 3.2% in 2026 and 3.3% in 2028.
Among the regions where prices could rise particularly sharply are South America and large parts of Africa, where inflation rates of over 20% are expected.
A total of 1,489 economic experts from 131 countries participated in the survey on inflation, which ran from March 11 to 25, 2025.
