Jury decides: Google's monopoly in app stores is illegal

Fortnite producer Epic Games has won a victory three years after its lawsuit against Apple and Google over alleged illegal app store monopolies. The jury in the Epic v. Google case found in its verdict that Google had transformed its Google Play app store and Google Play Billing service into an illegal monopoly.

The jury reached a unanimous verdict within a few hours. They found in the affirmative that Google has a monopoly in the markets for the distribution of Android apps and in-app billing services, that Google engaged in anticompetitive conduct in these markets, and that the plaintiff was harmed as a result.

Wilson White, vice president of public affairs and policy at Google, said the company plans to appeal the ruling.
