Mattel: Working on American Girl doll range live-action film
This announcement comes in the wake of the "Barbie" film, which was the highest-grossing film of 2023 with more than one billion dollars worldwide. Lindsey Anderson Beer will produce and write the screenplay for the American Girl doll movie.
"Growing up, my sister and I were American Girl girls. I had Kirsten, and she had Molly," Anderson Beer said in Wednesday's announcement. "They didn't feel like dolls to play with, they felt like real people whose worlds we could empathize with. They're historically accurate toys and accessories that have a sophisticated and deep backstory that lends itself perfectly to the movie adaptation."
First launched in 1986, the popular 18-inch dolls have names and backstories that were simultaneously published as novels.
The movie about the American Girl doll is being produced by Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill Entertainment. Mattel Films is also working on other live-action film adaptations with a number of other brands, including Barney, Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Thomas & Friends and Wishbone, the company announced in September.
