New regulations for games in China

China is taking another step towards stricter regulations for games published in the country. China has been working for years to restrict games in order to reduce the potential for addiction among younger players. Now, the Chinese regulatory authorities have published a new set of rules aimed at reducing in-game spending and rewards.

According to media reports, these new regulations mean that online games are no longer allowed to offer players rewards for logging in every day. They are also prohibited from rewarding players for first-time spending or the repeated purchase of game items. They would also be restricted from offering probability-based draw features to minors and from allowing the auctioning of game items.

Given that many live service and mobile games have one (or all) of these features to varying degrees, this represents a significant change to the way games are produced (and operated) in China.

As yet, there is no set date as to when the changes will come into effect.
