NGOs call on the European Commission to ban PVC

NGOs have launched a petition to call on the European Commission to phase out polyvinyl chloride (PVC) by 2030. They claim that PVC can be replaced by safer materials for almost all applications, including in toys.

At the request of the European Commission, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published a report on the risks associated with PVC in November last year and submitted a proposal to the Commission to ban certain additives used in PVC. The Commission is currently reviewing the ECHA report and drafting such a restriction.

ClientEarth, EEB, Zero Waste Europe and HCWH argue that a focus on additives is not enough and that a complete ban is appropriate.

So far, the petition has collected more than 1,000 signatures.
