Scrabble celebrates 75 years of letter fun today, on World Scrabble Day!

Scrabble, the best-selling and most popular word game that has delighted millions of people around the world for 75 years, celebrates a special anniversary on 13.4.2023.

Scrabble, which began in 1948 as a passion project of U.S. architect Alfred Mosher Butts, has become a popular game for young and old alike, with over 165 million copies sold to date. Since its invention, Scrabble has withstood the test of time and has become one of the best known and most enduring board games in history. The game's success is based on a fundamental truth: it's not how many words you know, but how you use them.

The tactical game has reinvented itself time and again with exciting innovations and designs, appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. For more than seven decades, the word game has delighted players around the world with its latest expansions, including the kid-friendly Scrabble Junior, the exciting Scrabble Trap Danger, and the latest innovation, Scrabble Vision, which brings augmented reality to the game. Licenses with pop culture relevant brands such as Harry Potter and Star Wars are also winning over fans worldwide.

Ray Adler, vice president and global head of games at Mattel, said, "We are thrilled to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the groundbreaking strategic word game Scrabble. After 75 years, Scrabble remains one of the world's most iconic games because it fosters meaningful connections across generations and harnesses the power of words. It's an ethos that players bring to life through the fun of making words on a shared game board. Today, we hope you too share in the fun of Scrabble that goes beyond words!"

Scrabble fans worldwide are encouraged to post their favorite and proudest Scrabble moments under the hashtag #75yearsofScrabble.

In honor of the anniversary year, the 75th special edition of Scrabble will be available in stores this summer. It is the highest quality Scrabble ever, made from more sustainable materials than any previous version of the classic game. The edition includes a rotating game board and espresso-stained wooden cabinet, as well as wooden stands and wooden game pieces. The game will be available in Germany from July 2023 at an RRP* of €129.99 in stores and in Mattel's online store. In Germany, we can also expect some highlights on the occasion of the Scrabble anniversary, such as an exciting Scrabble Honor Edition.

Scrabble is now available in 30 languages and in 120 countries around the world. In 2006, Ukrainian became the latest language to be introduced, as well as a Braille version of Scrabble for the visually impaired. On the occasion of its milestone birthday, Scrabble is perfectly positioned to offer another 75 years of fun beyond words.
