The new SPIEL mascot has a name
For the first time in its 40-year history, SPIEL Essen has a mascot – and this mascot now also has a name: Meeps. The subsidiary of Spielwarenmesse eG would like to thank 1,000 game fans who voted for it with an overwhelming majority.
SPIEL fans worldwide took part in the search for the name. From well over 400 suggestions, five were finally put to the vote. "The community voted and we think the name is very fitting," explains Carol Rapp, CEO of Merz Verlag. "Meeps is based on Meeple, which is well-known in the gaming world, and can also stand for an animal sound - plus it just sounds cute."
The kitten, created by renowned game illustrator Michael Menzel, is now on the road as an ambassador for SPIEL. It will get visitors to the world's largest board game fair in the mood for the event on the way to the grounds and on site.
