U.S. Video game spending declines compared to October 2022

Circana has published a report showing that total US consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories fell by 5% year-on-year to USD 4 billion in October 2023.

"Declines were seen across all spending categories. The decline was partly caused by the postponement of Call of Duty's release month," explained Mat Piscatella of Circana.

Spending on hardware

Spending on hardware fell by 23% year-on-year to 327 million US dollars. According to Piscatella, all current-generation consoles saw a double-digit percentage decline in dollar sales compared to the previous year.

Consumer spending

In the year to date, however, consumer spending has risen by 2% to 43.4 billion dollars.

"Declines were seen across all spending categories. The decline was partly caused by the postponement of Call of Duty's release month," explained Mat Piscatella of Circana.

Game sales

Game sales, including DLC, in-app purchases and subscriptions, amounted to 3.6 billion dollars, a decrease of 4% compared to the previous year. The only two areas that saw growth were physical copies of console games and mobile devices.

Best-selling console

The PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling console in terms of both unit sales and revenue, followed by the Xbox Series X|S.

Best-selling game

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Sony Corp.) was best-selling game in October.
