Wicked broke several box office records on its opening weekend.
The film event of the year enjoyed great popularity and grossed an impressive $164.2 million worldwide, including $114 million in the USA and over $50 million internationally. The film had not yet been released in some countries.
This makes Wicked the most successful film based on a Broadway show and surpasses the worldwide start of Les Misérables ($103 million) from 2012.
The film also has the strongest start of any movie that is not a sequel in 2024.
The film is also the biggest box office result of all time for director Jon M. Chu, composer Stephen Schwartz and co-star Cynthia Erivo.
