Wizards of the Coast and Royal Mail celebrate 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons

Royal Mail has unveiled 14 special edition stamps designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the world's greatest role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. The collection is under license from Hasbro and its Wizards of the Coast division. D&D is regarded as the first modern role-playing game and is estimated to have over 64 million fans worldwide.

Special set

The role-playing game system is particularly popular in the United Kingdom. All 14 stamps in the special set have therefore been illustrated by British artist Wayne Reynolds. Reynolds has created illustrations for many D&D books over the last 20 years.

The main set of eight stamps features a selection of iconic monsters from the game.

The world's largest role-playing game

When ultraviolet light is shone on the stamps of the main set, a special surprise becomes visible. Four stamps show the D&D Ampersand logo. The other four (Red Dragon, Vecna, Mimic and the Beholder) feature a graphic that matches the monster depicted. Each of these fluorescent graphics was created for the 50th anniversary.

World's largest role-playing game

First published in 1974, D&D was originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in Wisconsin, USA. In 1975, D&D was launched in the UK and has since become the world's largest role-playing game. The worlds, monsters and gameplay of D&D have significantly influenced today's popular fantasy in movies, television, video games and beyond.

The stamps and a range of collector's products can be pre-ordered from July 11 at www.royalmail.com/dnd. A pack containing all 14 stamps costs £24.40. The stamps will go on general sale on July 25.
