The product categories

Made by Nature

Wooden toys are classics of toys even in their early childhood development. In addition, there are now countless other natural materials from which toys can be made. The material palette ranges from bamboo to cork or corn to wool and rubber. The "Made by Nature" category is dedicated to toys that are made exclusively from natural materials.

Do your products fulfill the following criteria?

  •  Renewable raw materials as essential components
  • The origin of the raw materials excludes harmful effects such as B. the clearing and rededication of nature conservation areas (primeval forests, moors, etc.)
  • The use of renewable raw materials, the production location and the production standards are made transparent, e.g. B. through communication on the company or product website
  • The origin of the raw materials is precisely known and the supply chain is certified according to sustainability criteria if possible (forest raw materials: FSC and PEFC; agricultural raw materials: ISCC, RSB, RSPO, REDcert, Bonsucro etc.)

Inspired by Nature

This category shows products made from alternative plastics. In contrast to fossil resources, alternative plastics made from renewable raw materials such as bioplastics, sugar cane or maize protect the environment and reduce harmful CO2 emissions.

Do your products fulfill the following criteria?

  • Significant proportions or essential components of the product are made from renewable raw materials (at least 30%)
  • The content of biogenic raw materials (biomass or bio-based carbon) is measured / specified and certified as standard as possible (e.g. EN standard, DIN standard; TÜV, etc.)
  • The origin of the biomass excludes harmful effects such. B. the clearing and rededication of nature conservation areas (primeval forests, moors, etc.)
  • The origin of the biomass is precisely known and the supply chain is certified according to sustainability criteria if possible (forest raw materials: FSC and PEFC; agricultural raw materials: ISCC, RSB, RSPO, REDcert, Bonsucro etc.)
  • The use of renewable raw materials, the production location and the production standards are made transparent, e.g. B. through communication on the company or product website

Recycle & Create

Toys that are made from renewable or recycled raw materials and can be recycled into new products at the end of their lifespan are particularly sustainable. Numerous toys are already made from recycled materials, and it is precisely these products that make up the “Recycle & Create” category.

Do your products fulfill the following criteria?

  • Recycled raw materials (recyclates) were used to manufacture the product and information on use is verifiable and transparent (e.g. on the company or product website)
  • Information on repairability or service life is verifiable and transparent (e.g. guarantee declarations, return obligations)
  • Information on recyclability is verifiable and transparent (e.g. based on the criteria for the recyclability of packaging)
  • Offers for take-back systems are verifiable and transparent (e.g. on the company or product website)

Discover Sustainability

With toys, environmental and sustainability issues such as renewable energies, recycling and the like can be explained very easily and in a child-friendly manner. Because you can't start early enough to sensitize even the youngest to the issues of environmental protection and sustainability. "Discover Sustainability" is dedicated to this sustainable learning and play content.

Do your products deal with the following topics?

  •  Protection of the environment and nature (climate change)
  • Biodiversity (plants, animals)
  • Renewable energies (water, sun, etc.)
  • Circular economy (up / recycling, manufacturing, waste disposal, etc.)

Note: The design of the game (materials and packaging) must not obviously violate the sustainability criteria described in the other categories.

If your product has never been exhibited before at Spielwarenmesse, then you are automatically in the selection for the new category “sustainability” of ToyAward as well.

The process

  1. You can apply until December 6, 2021
  2. Confirmation of acceptance or rejection by December 15, 2021
  3. Submit your product by January 15, 2022
  4. Presentation of your product at the Spielwarenmesse and Spielwarenmesse Digital in February 2022
Info The conditions of participation

Each company can apply for a maximum of three products free of charge. Spielwarenmesse eG then decides on the selection of products that will be presented digitally and in Hall 3A.
