Lara Croft crowned most iconic video games character of all time

BAFTA has released the results of its extensive gamer survey to determine the most iconic video game character of all time. Over 4,000 gamers from around the world took part in the survey at the 20th BAFTA Games Awards on Thursday, April 11. 

Today's top 20 list includes characters from the last 20 years. Together, the characters and games have won 44 BAFTA Games Awards over the past two decades and are among the most popular characters among gamers around the world. 

Lara Croft leads the list

First place goes to the heroine Lara Croft, star of the Tomb Raider series, who has outlasted an entire generation. Lara Croft made her first appearance in 1996 and has been inspiring generations in video games, film and television ever since.  

Mario comes in second

In second place is Mario from the Nintendo series of the same name. The legendary Japanese game designer and BAFTA award winner Shigeru Miyamoto created Mario, the face of Nintendo and a highly recognizable character in the world of video games since he first appeared as Jumpman in the arcade game Donkey Kong in 1981.
